ESL ACTIVITY PLAN – "The Story of Pumpkin Pumpky"

Goal:
  • Introduce and practice basic vocabulary from a fall-themed story.
  • Support comprehension and active use of new words through movement, play, and visual aids.

Age: 4–6 years
Duration: 30–40 minutes
Level: Beginner (A1)

Warm-Up (5–10 min) – “Hello, Autumn!”

Objectives: greet, move, repeat simple vocabulary

Materials: flashcards: big, small, sad, happy, loved, special

Activities:
Greet children with a smile and short phrases:
“Hello! How are you today?”
Revise vocabulary: sad, happy, loved, special
TPR (Total Physical Response): Teacher says and shows, students repeat and act.
  • big / small (show size)
  • happy / sad (make faces)
  • loved, special 

1. Introduction – Presenting the words (5–10 min)

Objective: Introduce new vocabulary with visual support.
Materials: flashcards or illustrations (girl, pumpkin, wind, field, children, window).

Activities: The teacher shows each flashcard and says the word clearly:

👉 “girl” 
👉 “pumpkin” 
👉 “wind” 
👉 “field” 
👉 “children” 
👉 “window” 

Children repeat the words in chorus and individually.
The teacher adds a gesture or movement for each word (e.g., blowing for “wind,” pointing for “window”).

📌 Language: “Repeat after me.” “Say, girl.” “Good job!”


2.  Recognition game – Touch and Show (5–10 min)

Objective: Strengthen word-picture connection.
Materials: flashcards placed on the wall or floor.

Activities: The teacher says a word, and the children run and touch the correct picture.

👉 “Touch the pumpkin!”

 👉 “Show me the window!”

In the second round, children can say the word when they touch it.

📌 Language: “Touch the …” “Show me …” “What is this?”


3.  Story connection – Words in context (10 min)

Objective: Connect vocabulary with simple sentences and meaning.
Materials: illustrations for the story "The Story of Pumpkin Pumpky", level 1,  and flashcards.

Activities:

The teacher tells a simple version of the story and shows the flashcards when the words are mentioned. Children point to or hold up the correct flashcard when they hear the word.
 “There is a girl.”
 “The wind is blowing.”
 “The pumpkin is in the field.”

📌 Language: “Who can see the girl?” “Point to the pumpkin.”


4.  Worksheet activity (10–15 min)

Objective: Connect written words with corresponding pictures to reinforce vocabulary recognition and comprehension.
Materials: Worksheet “Match the Word with the Picture”,

Activities:
The teacher reads the words and gives clear instructions: “Draw a line to match the word with the correct picture.”  

📌Language: girl, children, pumpkin, field, window, wind

5.  Movement game – Listen and Move (5–10 min)

Objective: Comprehend and react physically to the vocabulary.
Materials: flashcards placed around the classroom.

Activities:

The teacher says a word, and the children move to the correct flashcard and act out a movement:

👉 “Run to the pumpkin!”

👉 “Fly like the wind!”

👉 “Wave to the girl!”

Variation: children say the words themselves.

📌 Language: “Go to the …” “Fly like the wind.” “Very good!”


6.  Closing circle – Review & mini quiz (5 min)

Objective: Review vocabulary and check understanding.
Materials: flashcards, a soft ball.

Activities:

Children sit in a circle.
The teacher shows a picture or tosses the ball and asks:
👉 “What is this?”
👉 “Say the word.”

Children respond: “pumpkin,” “girl,” “wind”…

📌 Language: “What is it?” “It’s a pumpkin.”
